Music for My Soul

What does it mean when people say, ‘That’s Music to My Soul”? My days are busy with things to do, running errands, completing tasks for work, meetings to attend, and being an uber service for our kids or grandkids. On any day, things can get really complicated, quick!

When times like that happen, I must remind myself to step back, breathe, and reground my thoughts so my anxiety does not manifest itself. Often, my mind immediately recalls the chorus to a spiritual song, thereby immediately lifting my spirits. Sometimes, I wake up with a tune in my head. Sometimes, I hum myself to sleep by relaxing with a tune in my head.

The amazing thing is that you have no control over which tune pops into your head and often just when you need it. Praise God that I have many tunes in my head and He selects the right one at the right time! Sometimes I may not understand why He chose a particular song, but as I sing it, I soon realize that it was the perfect message at the perfect time.

No matter where I am at, music is a necessary part of my conscience and mind. And therefore, becoming part of my inner soul. That is exactly why God speaks through music and why is it essential for me to have an inspirational playlist in my heart and mind.

In the Bible, David wrote a lot of songs that described his mood or feelings toward God. When I need a lift in my spirit, I study the book of Psalm. David truly knew how to sing unto the Lord. Throughout the Bible, there are multiple scriptures that support the significance of music in worship, praise, and inspiration. Here are just a few of my favorite:

"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!”  Psalm 150:6

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness; come into His presence with signing!” Psalm 100:1-2

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”  Colossians 3:16

“Come let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.”  Psalm 95:1

“My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to You, I whom you have delivered.”  Psalm 71:23

“Sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things.” Psalm 98:1a

If you find yourself without an inspiring playlist, I encourage you to immerse yourself in spiritual music. You can even pick your genre! Maybe you like the classic southern gospel music, or bluegrass gospel, or newer contemporary Christian music. I think over the years, my genre changes, but God’s word inspiring those songs will never change! Stand on His word when He puts a tune in your heart at the exact time that you need it. That my friend, is music for my soul!
