Living in Joy

The other day, I was sitting in the back yard watching a beautiful blue butterfly frolicking around the yard.

It sporadically moved through the trees in circles, moving up and down throughout its journey.  It landed on a tree limb to rest like it had no worries at all.  The more I sat there I realized that that beautiful little butterfly had brought me joy, just by watching it as it happily bounced around the yard.

I wasn’t sure what kind of butterfly it was, so I began looking it up on my phone.  Of course there was a big, long fancy scientific name for it, but what caught my interest was some of the folklore about a butterfly.  For example, many believe that a butterfly landing on you indicates that a positive change is coming in your life.  It’s brilliance and bright patterns are a reminder of your inner light and energy. 

A butterfly is active during the day and although its small, patterned wings are powerfully magnificent, it rests with its wings held vertically over its back. The dust-like scales on it wings and body come off when handled, so it is best to not pick them up as it can hinder its ability to fly.  Also interesting is that of a butterfly’s life has four stages: egg, larvae, chrysalis and adult. On the average an adult butterfly will live only 2-4 weeks.  Wow!  Such a short life with such a beautiful message.

Seeing a butterfly is more than just a beautiful sight, it carries a powerful spiritual message. Across many cultures and traditions, butterflies symbolize transformation, a spiritual awakening, and bring messages from the divine. They represent personal growth, renewal, and the journey of the soul, representing change and new beginnings. Christian tradition views the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection.  The emergence of an adult butterfly from its chrysalis is one of the most spectacular examples of this process.  Just like a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, you can also grow and renew your spirit through God’s amazing grace.  In Romans 12:2, we are reminded “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”  This verse emphasizes spiritual metamorphosis, much like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.

Butterflies represent a spiritual awakening and a connection to the divine.  They are small but extremely beautiful as they happily dance around the yard, moving among the flowers spreading love.  Butterflies use the sun as a compass that adjusts their internal body clock and their erotic flying wards off any predators. They use the sun as a guidance, therefore reminding us to use the SON as guidance.

Butterflies are widely associated with peace and tranquility, and their landing on you could symbolize that calmness is entering your life. Their delicate nature is a reminder to embrace harmony and let go of chaos or stress. A butterflies dancing movement, so light and free, represents freedom and joy. Simply watching a butterfly dance around the yard is a gentle reminder to live in the moment and appreciate life’s fleeting beauty. When a butterfly lands on you, it’s an invitation to pause and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. And in doing so, you uncover a sense of inner peace that has been waiting quietly within you, a sign of a soul that is set free!  Flutter like a butterfly and choose joy!  Let others see God’s reflection of love in you.
