Facing the SON

Recently on a trip down the river, I noticed a phenomenon that intrigued me. Twice every day, when the sun came up and when the sun began to set, all the birds gathered in a line. Their chatter was loud and distinct, sounding like a happy conversation. I noticed that they all faced the sun. That made me a little curious. Why was this ritual of sunbathing such an important part of a bird’s day and especially twice a day? Why did the birds congregate with other birds? Why did they always face the sun?
Like anybody else, I searched for it online. It was pretty amazing to find out why birds gather in the early morning and at dusk, facing the sun! Birds often face the sun so they can bask in the warmth of the sun while they fellowship. Physically, this action increases their body temperature to prepare them for the coolness of the morning or night. The sun’s warmth also dries their feathers and removes mites and lice from their feathers. Sunbathing increases the production of vitamin D to help the birds physically. The sun stimulates the uropygial gland, which produces vitamin D oil so they can coat their feathers and ingest it during preening. Preening is like grooming, the birds prepare themselves for the beginning of the day or when they settle down at night.
Well, that research led me to think about how God uses nature to teach us important core values. Let us look at a bird’s spiritual message to us!
First, the birds do not stress or worry about today or tomorrow because they know their Father in Heaven will always provide, even if it snows or the ground is frozen. Jesus often used birds as examples of how God provides for their daily needs. They teach us about faith and provision. In Matthew 6:26-27, we are told to look at the birds of the air for they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, yet the Heavenly Father feeds them. And if God cares that much about the sparrows, then He will surely take care of the children He made in His image! The carefree existence of birds illustrates how we should not worry about anything and trust God that He will provide everything we need. All we must do is abide in Him and serve in obedience.
Second, the way birds freely soar through the air teaches us to reach toward Heaven and soar above any material things here on Earth. We must rise above what the carnal world expects and stand up for the values and core beliefs of Christ. Having hope in the Lord will allow us to soar. In Isaiah 40:31, we are reminded that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength and soar on wings like eagles, not growing weary or faint. Renewing our strength can only be accomplished through intimate fellowship with God. His strength is evident when we read the Bible, pray without ceasing, and praise without hesitation.
Third, some cultures use birds to represent different traditions or values. Often, birds are mentioned in the Bible as being a messenger of God. For example, God’s message of protection is demonstrated through the way a bird protects its young. The female bird prepares a soft nest for her young while the male bird watches over the family and helps bring food for the littles. An eagle, a bird of power and prestige, demonstrates God’s message of strength. Native Americans see the soaring eagle as a close and peaceful connection to God the Creator. God’s message of wisdom and intuition is demonstrated through the owl. Its silent flight and keen vision in darkness teaches us how to be silent at times and how to have a keen awareness of things around us, especially in the darkness of evil. A dove symbolizes the peace and presence of God. They visit as a reminder of His divine spirit, usually bringing a message of hope. And finally, the tiny hummingbird teaches us about joy and resilience. Its tiny size must overcome challenges during flight, but it is resilient. They also teach us to pursue the sweetness of life, like they search for sweet nectar. Both bring joy. Just like these birds are so tiny, we may feel like a small speck in this big ole world. But remember, we are important in God’s eyes and our voice as a Christian really does matter.
To receive spiritual wisdom from nature requires an open heart and being mindful of God’s voice. He will often speak through nature, whispering words that can empower you. Just like the seagulls facing the sun, we need to stay facing the SON and allow His warmth to renew our bodies so that we can do more kingdom work for Him. Be intentional and face the SON in the morning before your day starts and look for His faithful guidance. And at the end of your day, face the SON again, thanking Him for all the opportunities that He gave you that day to reflect His love.
Sit in His presence and soak in the warmth of His love. Seek spiritual understanding by simply listening for His voice. Praying is not always doing the talking. Sometimes all we need to do is be still and listen. Find your spot facing the sun and sit quietly. Be inspired by His presence and the peace only He can offer. I encourage you listen to the song belong while sitting outside, facing the sun, and embrace the warmth of His love!
